NC Outer Banks Points of Interest
The
NC Outer Banks offer many points of interest for such a small
land mass. The blending of history and natural beauty makes it the
natural choice for an educational family vacation. If history combined
with a mystery intrigues you, don't miss America's oldest outdoor
drama: "The
Lost Colony," which tells the story of Roanoke Island's
missing settlement; Monday through Saturday evenings from early
June to late August.
WRIGHT
BROTHERS NATIONAL MEMORIAL
Near
Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills, the 1st successful sustained powered
flights in a heavier-than-air machine were made here by Wilbur and
Orville Wright on Dec. 17, 1903. A granite monument perched atop
Kill Devil Hill commemorates this achievement. The Wright Brothers
National Memorial is home to a refurbished replica of the original
Wright Flyer as well as other memorabilia of the First Flight, the
Wright Brothers National Memorial and Visitor Center commemorates
the day man attained flight.
The
Visitor Center is open daily from 9am-6pm, there is an entrance

NORTH CAROLINA AQUARIUM ON ROANOKE ISLAND
Twice
its original size, the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island
features the largest aquarium in the state a 285,000-gallon
ocean tank complete with sharks, sea turtles and hundreds of fish.
A replica of the USS Monitor anchors the exhibit and scuba divers
give daily educational programs. Animal feedings take place daily
at 3 p.m.
The
Aquarium, located on Airport Road just three miles north of Manteo
off of Highway 64, is open daily year round. Operating hours are

CAPE
HATTERAS NATIONAL SEASHORE
The
first national seashore in the country, Cape Hatteras National Seashore,
extends from south Nags Head to Ocracoke Inlet and includes Hatteras
Island (Dare County) and Ocracoke Island (Hyde County) in its 75
mile, 30,000 acre entirety. ''The Park'' as it is referred to locally,
offers a wide variety of activities. From birding to boating; camping
to cycling; fishing to folklore; and surfing to seashells with natural
and historic attractions thrown in, this is the place to be!
CAPE
HATTERAS LIGHTHOUSE
The
tallest in the nation and a famous symbol of North Carolina. The
Cape Hatteras lighthouse site has a visitors center that is open
daily 9am-5pm throughout the year and is home to a display of the

FRISCO
NATIVE AMERICAN MUSEUM
Nationally
recognized collection of Native American artifacts, historical and
educational displays. The collection includes rare Apache research
archives. The Natural History Center includes educational displays,
special films, live exhibits, and self-guided nature trails winding
though beautiful maritime forest on the premises. Special seminars
and workshops are available for schools, scouts, senior citizens
and the visually impaired.
